Footprints in the Windsm # 1624

If all you see is the bad, you are missing out. If you see the bad and still see the world as holy, you have the picture whole.

Footprints in the Windsm # 1623–Political crisis as harbinger of spiritual crisis

Footprints in the Windsm # 1623

This difficult time in our country’s politics—maybe especially because of two choices nobody likes—it could be the harbinger of a spiritual crisis for us as a people. Crisis as in life and death—but not simply a bifurcation point. We may have to die as a people before we find our life. What death looks like we cannot know before it happens. Nor life. But we know it is about going through the difficult, about work, about all truths, not just some, about life. Maybe this is world wide and not just our country.

Footprints in the Windsm # 1622–approaching the gift of aging

Footprints in the Windsm # 1622

Life is not what we make of it but what we give to it, in the little moments. Sitting here reflecting, writing for someone who may never see it, is more important than all the urgent things on my to do list. This may be approaching the gift of aging.

Footprints in the Windsm # 1621–See a problem, am the problem

Footprints in the Windsm # 1621

When I see a problem, I am the problem: the seeing of a problem is the very problem. I do not need to work on the problem, for it does not exist except in one or more minds. So the question is can we grow without needing problems, something to be wrong?

Footprints in the Windsm # 1617

We are not demented to be happier, more in touch with the years and generations, and more reflective than in a younger age. Losing one’s mind might be a good thing; having our brain tangled is a whole other matter!

Footprints in the Windsm # 1615–Attacks and shootings: less lethal default

Footprints in the Windsm # 1615

Wondering about the various attacks and shootings the last week or so, and whether there might be some response less than lethal. The point is, we might learn something from these people: whether and who their accomplices are, how they got this way, how we might prevent radicalization.

The Dallas shooter for instance might have been taken down with a flash-bang and some tranquilizer or even tear gas. The motorists killed for reaching for a wallet might have been prevented by a stun gun from bringing out a feared weapon. I have not received police training so I don’t know what is possible. But it seems the only response we have been using is to kill.

There was a call today for all-out war on terrorism. How does that work if radicalization happens in families and small groups and even individuals? If the enemy wears no uniforms and comes at you in ones and twos, what good’s an atom bomb or a battleship? Sounds kind of like the colonists fighting the redcoats.

The answer may be at least in part to get the information we can where we can, and that might mean making less lethal the default.

Footprints in the Windsm # 1612–The killing

Footprints in the Windsm # 1612

The killing of two bailiffs in St. Joe this week would probably not have made national news if it had not been for the three sets of shootings the week before. We are aware of such things, tend to connect them, although the last was disconnected from the others as far as we can tell.

It is good we are aware, seeing and connecting more. We need to be wise about what we do connect up.

There is something else of which to be aware: our very noticing, our very awareness, and the heart that it carries. It is saying this is wrong, we could have been right, we can still be right. Let’s try.

That’s what the protests and videos are about. And all the speeches and yes the name-calling: we can be better, we can do this better. We can be more human. We.

Footprints in the Windsm # 1610–Alzheimer’s: modern Magellans? A different freedom

Footprints in the Windsm # 1610

“Right up to the last minute,”
Joelle said to me
“the soul has work to do”
Weeks later her words
lead me to ask
What if it were
more opening than disease
this Alzheimer’s
& these our tribe’s explorers?
What might they discover
learn & teach
these modern Magellans
freed of memory?
What is learning
if released from memories?
What is life?
Traveling unencumbered
by memory
how might they move?
Where go?
Maybe it’s we who
hold them back
with talk of yesterday
and this morning
and 5 minutes ago
& we their Sherpas
carrying their food
bedding & tent
while they attend
their ascents

Footprints in the Windsm # 1605–Arguments scream around us

Footprints in the Windsm # 1605

Arguments scream around the world between radical fundamentalists. What brings that about? Some speak of a dialogue of the deaf.

Whence the deafness? Hate is one source. Hate feels good. Hate establishes false superiority. Love feels better: and we do not reach it.

Fear is another. The opposite of love. We fear the other might be right. Let us clean the world of all who are not the same as us. Then we can live in peace.

How to break through that? Somehow we have to unstop our ears. If we can hear one another, we can discover our common humanity. Even our common wonder at what creation holds.

That requires willingness, and again we are back to finding a path to our heart of hearts. If we have armored that away, how then?

Maybe that armor is dissolved by tears. Maybe there are other things to open the armored heart.
