Do not be frightened. Fear is the root of the power of the rising leaders: they control by keeping us in fear. Maybe not fear of them, for they want to be seen as saviors; fear of what they fear, for they fear mightily. Us, mainly: they fear us. We must love mightily.

First there came flooding of the low-lying coastal cities, forcing businesses and people to relocate inland. Then the weather went from extreme to extreme which caused crop failures 7 years running; plant diseases spread; beef and chicken production dropped to half. Malnutrition among humans led to the spread of disease—and wars. Despite all that we were unprepared for “the disease” which wiped out 60% of the world population in just 5 months, 80% in 2 years.

And that was what saved us.

There were not enough of us to sustain our former birth rates which meant a re-thinking of corporate growth philosophy. Besides, we had bodies to bury and ill folks to tend. We saw the face of love—and our real growth. We started anew.

What kind of a project might we attempt which would take many lifetimes? In the middle ages, they constructed cathedrals. In every age, people plant trees. One is an easy one day task that nature takes over; the other requires concerted efforts by many people over generations. Both require vision, trust, generosity. Maybe not much else. But these in large measures. Trust in generations before and after our own: that they will see the vision, and carry it out. Generosity to create a vision that will be a gift to the later generations. A vision that will engage and be engaged by several generations. How big can we be?

It’s not so much that “those” who run the far off corporate headquarters buy from sweatshops. It is much more that we all have become lax in holding one another to highest standards. As many as we are, and as far away, we are still a human community. We grow that community by our every action and choice, by what we write in letters to the editor and to the CEOs, what we tell each other in shops, offices, churches, and coffee houses.
