The bowl gathers in

The bowl gathers in
steaming soup holds
it to spill over
the rim into
conversation with our mouths

to the whole made up of us

The center, the hub, the meaning
—larger than a sum of each
more than our betweens—
to the whole made up of us
hear here

Sometimes something

I speak my mind
Sometimes
I speak something in the air
Sometimes
Words come out of my mouth
Unfolding
New thoughts
New relationships among us
Each of us new
A new dawn
Sometimes something works

The world is not as simple as you think

The world is not as simple as you think
Stars, black holes, and galaxies
Animal, vegetable, mineral
Liberal and conservative
Competition and ecology
People and things
Living and inert
The world is not as simple as it seems
It is far simpler

Our words keep us from seeing

Our words keep us from seeing. Look to the stars in the night sky. If we could stand next to one of those stars, we’d see the all-consuming burning, feel the storminess, be rushed with gases—so much we’d get we miss in the word star. The same is true of those words look, night, sky, and in. More than the, this is truly our universe.
