Emergence: the act of thinking together?

What is emergence? Is it a real happening, or just a word we apply to the act of thinking together? The test would be if emergence happened if there were only a single person present. But even then, how do we separate out the voices the person has collected over a lifetime? It is entirely possible that emergence is the phenomenon we see when people think together, when they meet.
