Not the ex-stream of “All for society”
Not the ex-stream of “I’m the only one who matters”
Rather the wideness of sharing.
Between, the richly colorful:
Back and forth a new river flows
Exploring, exploring,
Touching you, touching me,
Touching–being–a common hurt-nerve.
Here fecundity
Lives
And we grow–
Gardens on broad islands–
A new mind and heart–
Of which we all are essential parts.
In the stream of life we can
Stand, be swept along, or
Become flow.

Footprints in the Wind sm # 636

Footprints in the Windsm # 636

What would it mean to take responsibility for a life full of G*d? What would it mean to converse with and through G-d? What would it mean to see each other as sacred, as embodied love and gift? What would it look like? It would look like ordinary conversation made earnest. It would be meeting each other as persons, whole, complete, able to change us and to change the world and to change. It would be vulnerability. It would be risking our whole selves. It would be throwing away what we have and who we think we are to come new into the world.

Footprints in the Windsm # 635

Years ago I glimpsed the evocative notion of unknowing going. I suppose then I saw it as a branch of bravado: we cannot see the future, but we can trust the path we are on, the way we have chosen, or the God who lays out for us our life. We best forge on.

Unknowing going has a deeper meaning: we have a need to be ever going into the unknowing. In confusion and lostness we meet G*d. It is not that we trust G*d, but that G*d’s ways are above ours: here we learn, here we grow; here we become new, beyond our imaginations.

I-Thou is what the stick, the circle and the open space is about: touching the real in persons again. This is the forgotten dimension. This is where the power in anything is found. It is the power that makes some people nervous and want to run away. Instead, let us stand courageously and face what we can do–together. It is about seeing something new and by the very seeing making it real. Seeing makes us real; touching gives us life.

Being whole means leaving a gift behind for the world to unwrap and enjoy. For are we not more complete, more whole, when we give?

What is the gift I want to leave behind for the world to find? What would go beyond me and my name if instead just my light were left? What would that light be?

To see ourselves and each other as just a little larger every day, to be whole, complete and exploding. If just a few can see and teach others to see, soon we all would see.

Footprints in the Windsm # 625

It is not that we have such knowledge in us that can replace a professor; rather we have such depth and height in us that is suppressed when information is dispensed from outside. Each person must participate in his or her own opening. Information and knowledge are of one realm, wisdom and Spirit of another. We as teachers must take care we do not become a hindrance.

Sometimes we do need to learn things and gather knowledge. But other times, we need to find what is in us: what we are made of; whom we yet might be; how we may serve; whom we are connected with. That we do not get from a teacher but from exploring our selves closer to the connecting point.

Footprints in the Windsm # 624

I like the age I am. I like my grey hair. I like knowing that the world does not depend upon me. The world will keep turning without me. I like knowing that the world does depend upon me. The world will turn better with my shoulder to the wheel. I like not knowing. I like the wonder and the mystery of what confronts me at the age I am.

The teacher, the insight, and the prophet serve a higher calling if they require of the hearer interpretation. A minimum of two understandings should be presented, forcing the hearer to examine his or her life. In that examination is found unconscious and collective wisdom, creativity, and choice. Get the person into his or her life. Stimulate wonder. Call imagination to action. Go out of and beyond ourselves.

Footprints in the Windsm # 618

There is a wind that runs through things
sometimes it permeates and rises
it is the look of wonderment
it is the green of grass, the leap of foal
it is the choral song of birds
inklings that rise up in your head
in all these and more, and more
there is a wind that runs through all.

What is the difference between
the gesture of a hand held out
inviting help and one
offering help?
More than the differences
we see,
are we all
more alike?

We must turn.
How do we turn?
We must turn to one another.
How do we do that?
Where can it lead?
What is possible?
What is possible?
What is possible!

Footprints in the Wind sm # 616

Footprints in the Windsm # 616

There are people who profess themselves to be atheists. Yet there is not so much difference between them and people of religion, as either group might think of the other. For each group is stuck in a picture of G-d which is a picture. Often it is the same for both groups: a beneficent (or angry) old man with a long beard, sitting on a throne, with gifts held in reserve and a thunderbolt in his left hand, ready to punish. If our pictures of life were enlarged, if we were to step back just a bit further so we could see a larger panorama, what might we see? Babies who melt the hearts of stony men. People helping each other when disaster strikes. Hate breaking out into wars from which peace breaks out again because humans cannot long stand to be in armed conflict. If we once take an un-pre-judged look at the world and see its all in all, we can be prepared to move beyond a picture of any god, to opening to the all there is. Then we stop having to convert each other and look all about us to see.
