to face the word “death”
It may be courage that we need: to face the word “death,” to look upon a real person dying, to confront our own.

What do we want from this session? To give pieces of information people can put in their closets? Or to awaken people—to injustices in dying in our community—to opportunities for compassion? Or to advertise our organizations? Or to gather people who care to do some important compassionate work? I choose the last of these.

After years of writing
—contracts, letters, Wills, poems—
I find I have been forming myself
working on what remains after
paper is shreds & pen is broken

A good invitation will take us further than a great lecture.

No member of my church has died since the new pastor came. Not a single one in 8 years. People only fall asleep. Not just during sermons.

Ir is the name of the window
Through which I the poet enter—
Irrelevance
Irreverence
Sometimes its meaning skips the Ir

To squeeze out
a single drop
of your life’s
essence
is your highest
gift
to the world

Take your tree with you
Your center of gravity
Limbs, limbs a-reaching

Softly, softly face the world
See the balloon soften as it lands
To the contours of this hill conforming
:- Doug.
I am stupid, I am wise
I am evil, I am good
I am hateful, I am lovable
If I cannot say all this
See all this
I have a ways to go to
Whole, full, complete, rounded

In a universe of quantum leaps, there need be no distance between any of us.
:- Doug.
Of quantum leaps, of God, of conversing: G and conversation leap to us across quantum spaces–which are not there! There are no separations through which we must pass.
:- Doug.
If fierce conversation takes place in
the betweens
& when we make quantum leaps
the betweens
may not be there at all
then perhaps we
are the person
with whom we are conversing
:- Doug.
G is in each person & creature
& emanates from each
—how can we miss the flow?
or the betweens that, like in
quantum leaps, are not there at all?—
:- Doug.
Some days above the changing skies
Some days solid beneath my feet
Some days in wind about me swirling
Some days, most days, without an image
Some days my God is a some days God
