not to defend yourself

The object is not to defend yourself, but to bring wholeness to our midst.

as in a letter to a lover

You can be whole when you empty yourself and give it all—all—away, as in a Will, or a letter to a lover, or a prayer of your heart.

Here we are ripped open:

Somehow life and love and surrender and courage are part of the same ball. Of course they are: they are part of life, part of the really real. Yet they are keys to it, doors to life.

This looks to the outside world like crazy-making, and to those of us inside like whole-making.

All is tied together by love

All is tied together by love: love calls us to courage as surely as love calls us to surrender. Surrender is unto death. It is not to subservience, but to life and to new nascences.

We are nothings and everything

We are both nothings and everything: some day our carcass will become but food for other creatures great and small, and yet, and yet, the universe was arranged just so as to bring forth us!

Where disorganization comes in

This is where disorganization comes in. We cannot plan our careers like someone in a novel plotting the move from City Council to Senator to President in twelve ever more prosperous years. If we keep our eyes and hands and hearts open, we can meet friends and life itself. Yet this takes courage for we know there are tears and sweat and many little deaths and the larger death. And if we are attentive, we see that there is life coming out of the rotting leavings.

You, human, came here alone

You, human, came here alone,
Naked, penniless
You leave the same
In between, you create worlds
Caroming or snoring

all the best ideas are here

We need all the best ideas, the heart and minds of our brightest, the efforts of our strongest, the courage of those among us of heart, the tears of those we often do not see. Why then exclude any peoples with these qualities from our circles, our land?

Love’s gift: courage

Gift of love is
courage, that heart stuff
Opposite of love is
fear, that shadow of death
Fear shrivels us
Courage expands us
Death is the dancer we must get to know
Love, fear & courage dance
from this dance comes
life

Competition is a way of raising fear

Competition is a way of raising fear: we fear what our competitor might do, we fear we might go out of business or become a laughing stock. Fear is the food of competition.

To be innocent
is to be healing, renewing
of self & others
innocent is clearing-seeing
the unwounded beneath the wounds
trusting that healing’s at hand

Dried out old sticks

Dried out old sticks
we modern humans
set to snap
How we need to invent anew
ways to allow compassion
to flow
compassion for people of other
colors & hues
religions oft distorted
politics oft screaming at us
Give no energy to
what clearly hurts us
Can we still be attracted to compassion?
Our heartwood’s strength is here
