I do not suspect this apprehends all in its essence, but I do ask if I have made a valid or at least useful metaphor. It seems it has promise.

If I am seeing something useful, then we do not have to own our differences or our egos or our accomplishments, all of which we will one day lay down. But we can see how we fit the flow, we matter, though we have no permanent existence, although we may be eternal too.

We do not have the courage to love. We do not know how to find the courage to love.

You work in a nursing home. You are not a manager. You want to be caring to those you are given to help. You want to be kind and gentle and take time with them, listen to them, brush back their hair, treat them as individual persons. You want to speak soothingly to the person who is fighting you as you clean them up and change their diaper.

But, your manager has given you 6 people to care for in the next 25 minutes, and others have said to not let yourself get too close to your patients.

Do we have the courage to speak truth to the power over our paycheck, our very job? Do we have the courage to say to managers that the corporate “philosophy” or “business model” could be more healthy and that it might even help the “bottom line?” Do we have the courage to speak our heart and our love in a culture that fears that kind of talk?

Where do we find this courage?

If you watch the news actively, can it be a way to develop your skills in compassion? Increase the quantity of compassion in the world?

As our humanity grows in less physical theaters, such as mental, intellectual, spiritual, caring, it is inevitable that some of us will not pick up the new, or will do so imperfectly, or will break it, or will fight it. So we can expect increasing inane and insane acts. As love moves in, so do Hitlers, Sadams, and hoodlums. As the Internet shows us all to be one, so grow the cries to strengthen the borders, keep out the other, keep us pure. We who see something larger must expect increasingly to see smaller minds grow more active. It is a sign. A sign that if what we see is upon testing better, we must increase our resolve and open our mouths.

Why at end of life do we make poor decisions? There are several issues interrelated:

1. we don’t anymore know when someone is dying;

2. we want to hang on to life, but we have not thought about what living is for us;

3. we do not know why we want to hold on to life, what tasks we want to complete;

4. we think we can get back to life as it was 5 or 10 years ago;

5. we think science can overcome death, if not now, then in a few days, if not for others, then for us.

What others?

In the face of not knowing, how then would be best for us to prepare ourselves?
