It is more than Rilke’s becoming a world in response to another. It is true as he says we probably cannot merge (I take it, in the sense of disappearing) into our other—we can only be ourself. Yet I think that we need that fully human self to enter into this together state with our other. We are never finished meeting. We are never finished growing. So we need to ever uncover and affirm that we are and need to be strangers.

It is a dream of the Golden Gate Bridge, Manhattan, the Grand Canyon, the Badlands, the Kentucky caves, Lincoln’s homeland, songs of blessing and thanksgiving, it is the land of Thanksgiving, songs of your land and my land, a dream of a good people. It is not primarily the land of opportunity or of the strongest army or navy. It is the melting pot. It is not always right but it knows to make amends when it is not. It is for you if you are tired or poor or just an average Joe or Jane.

We get into impoverished territory in conversing and in writing, in story and in singing, when we commit to words too soon. The wind and the song, the notion and the moon, must be allowed to season longer than we wish. Wait. The words will ripen if it is right to do so. Together, we can encourage each other to pause, longer. We don’t need words as much as gathering.
