After I left our meeting, I had a call for an emergency appointment. The person arrived a few minutes after I got back to my office. Her husband of 40+ years was in the hospital, unconscious. The doctors said he was dying. They were doing no treatment. She wanted to take him home and care for him there with TLC and strong prayer. Let’s grant that prayer changes things. Was the husband wrong? Was his body wrong? Was the trajectory of his living towards dying wrong?

With whom else might we converse, we who converse across the generations? What are the questions about which to converse? What questions would lead us to a higher humanity?

What is higher humanity? What are our highest aspects? Who are our exemplars and why do we esteem them? Lincoln, Gandhi, Jesus, Gautama, Tubman for examples. They showed us the best in ourselves. What best? Caring. Kindness. Big-heartedness. Strength in these. Vulnerability and humanness. Speaking to all of us….

So perhaps we can write biographies of human people. Or simply write why we revere these people. Pebbles in the forest, a trail to follow.

It matters that we go find out what specific things matter to each of us. It matters we draw out of our essence, it matters we reflect, it matters we commit. It matters that we mean and touch something larger than ourselves.

It matters that we open doors of study and perception, and see is only part of it. It matters we grow. It matters we look to see. It matters we listen to hear. It matters we open our spirits to one another, to the generations. It matters that the world becomes larger, more diverse, more loving. It matters we converse.

It matters that we don’t all reach for the same thing.

That there is a consensus reality in a world of people and butterflies each enacting their own worlds is to be expected: each puts an edge to the free flights of the next. So we are unlikely to notice the green of the sky, the blue of the grass, and South Bend stopping at this train. Yet: this infinite feedback gives forth infinite holes in the fence.
