On Thanksgiving evening
My daughter in law’s mother is dying
Losing energy, losing memory
Slipping away, surely, over too few months
Her father too is sliding into a long good-bye
So my sister sat down next to my daughter in law
And God hugged my daughter in law helplessly

Story may be a probabilistic fractal: where stories are applied with a dollop of randomness in each succeeding generation so that humanicity develops meaning.

So we cannot, ought not, seek to bestow our truth on the generations. Better we can ask them to develop their own. Give them a recipe to make recipes. Maybe they will pass along an even more fundamental recipe creation recipe.

What adds especial interest to this flow is the additional feedback loops that become possible as we find ways to extend lives: imagine an elder at 120 hearing a new truth from elders at 80 and 110, and together they bring forth an entirely new generation of truth.

Today I feel on the cusp of something new. We do not fear age so much as society’s fearful picture of age. And that perhaps stems from too little factual knowledge of what aging comprises.

I suspect that far fewer people are debilitated in old age than we think, and that far fewer of those who are debilitated would be but for cultural beliefs.

So we should be living engaged, stirring the pot, rolled into the mix, risking life for life.

If your eleventh generation grandfather had written a story wouldn’t you want to read? Particularly if it were addressed to you? Wouldn’t you make an effort to interpret its language and thought patterns into your own life? A story from your own life would hold the interest for your eleventh generation grandchild, or a story you make up and address to them saying “I wrote this for you.” Perhaps you ask them strategic questions.

What do I want elders to do? Take a bigger view of their role for the grandchildren. Take responsibility for the grandchildren. Tell stories, play games, give their spirits. See and accept their central roles in the future of the human species.
