The more I see of the world, the more I see of the world. I hope.

Last night we watched the movie “American Sniper.” It had me noticing what we do to our best and most committed: we mess up their bodies, their heads, we kill them, we fail to treat them well medically when they return, we throw them out. And this on both sides. Yes, there was evil on the farther side, but also on this. To what extent was the evil generated by the size and ego of the governments involved? Has the nearer side done anything to feed the hatred from the farther side? Are there any innocents in the power realms?

Meditation/contemplation has been good the last few days. I think it has been giving me the larger attitude, the one that allows me to not invest emotional or meaning-like energy in what I am observing. I like myself when I am able to do that: I have a calming demeanor, not isolated from what is going on, but actually more engaged in some important way.

If we gather people with more questions than answers, more uncertainty than assuredness, more tears than laughter, something unexpected, richly nuanced—and real—stands a chance of emerging.

We work with fire. Inviting people to announce their most burning issue or opportunity, to gather a small group, and get to work.

Transformation releases energy. When one thing transforms to another, e.g. when water evaporates, energy is released or stored: it moves. When people’s thinking and emotions transform, e.g. smiles morph into tears, then energy is present and available to do work. Ponder. What work can we do? Open tunnels. Move toward action.
It seems the tears need to come second. Then the action comes out of confronting the complexity. Smiles last tends to move us away from the nuances, complexity, and depth of living.

We can get deeper places by bringing in the complexity. Challenge with complexity. Bring us face to face to complexity.
