Let’s write a short study of folks we admire in their old age. A sketch of the person, then a dialogue with this person about wisdom and what they are doing with their wisdom and why. Then go into meditation/contemplation, then a let’s converse about what we have experienced.

or the teaching
wisdom may be in
seeing
and asking

What do you notice about older people, particularly those you admire? What’s this say about wisdom? About you? About your brand of wisdom?

Move from 1. What’s in it for me? to 2. What’s it mean? to 3. What’s it? (Just being fully present.) So what’s this say of wisdom?

Pay attention to dreams—particularly those just before waking—that’s your noticing part talking to you (maybe sometimes your wiser part—in any event a part of you speaking to you). Attention must be paid.

Pay attention to dawn thoughts.

My father-in-law used to say retired people are easy to talk with—they have nothing to prove. Perhaps this means no ego.

As an elder
what I have to teach
is conversation of love

It’s interesting about our egos that they always want to take over. Yet, if we had no ego, we would still be alive, still be loved, still be heard.

So what is the best I can do, be? This moment and tomorrow morning? I can speak with others. Be present without my self. Talk about what matters.

Wisdom has dimensions
Knowledge cannot compass

less we have it
more it has us
less we seek it
more it finds us

God is vision
of peace and mercy
justice and compassion
larger, better
us

Elders have a profound value to give: our blessing. Sometimes it is sought without the person knowing what they seek. We can give it in non overt easy to take ways: you are seeing more here than meets the eye: trust yourself; let me tell you a story; sometimes I suffered for making that kind of decision though a different decision would have left me uneasy. A hinted-at blessing can be of larger value for the work of unwrapping.
