What of yourself do you need to let go? What new do you suppose (you cannot know) would serve your next growth? What are the limits of whom you have been? What are the strengths you now need?

Same thing for the elders themselves. There are people out there who want to do something: I need to seek them out.

Nor even to remember
Rather to show us a longer view

Let’s be about claiming and re-writing the elder archetype for our times and these people. What would fit your background and sense of calling? Your schedule, your energy, your resources? Whom might you elder? How will you “speak?”

Take inventory—all that and who are important to you—people, living things, philosophy, spiritual, story, future, past, present, health, views. An early step in your eldering.

To go deeper, let’s share little moments and observations: I saw a lonely leaf on a bare branch; and I saw I was like it.

Eldering involves work: on ourselves, our families and friends, our communities small and large: all with love.

The great discomforts of aging in our culture are not what you might expect. Rather elders are being cast aside, not honored nor even seen, told to concentrate on what is failing and being taken away and never on what is developing.

Effective loving take us a step or two beyond tough love: not only saying No, but guiding to a self-vision of possibility beyond Yes and No; beyond I am doing something to you, to equals together exploring where love takes us, you affecting me and me affecting you.

Elder or middler? Many want to push older people to become just older middlers. Is that good for elders, for our society?
