Elders are at the everlasting middle of the journey—far enough beyond initial beginning to see possibilities ahead.

Give the grandchildren your commitment for what you will do For the Grandchildren: e.g. continual study, enlisting others in the conversation: make these things small enough you will do it; radical enough to stir the blood; then go home and edit it—make it sharper, truer.

I do not expect to resolve this. What I might be able to do is to give myself direction for the next few years, weeks, or glimpses.

As I was contemplating, I saw there are many silences, many beings, many holies, many intimacies. What is going on is the one pull to intimacy, as well as the opposing push to conflict. Maybe there are strange attactors, one of which is to create what did not exist.

Our task is to face the grandchildren. Then to meet them. How and where to meet them is our mutual issue. We have common ground to seek.

What do we have to give the grandchildren? One response is we have our intimacy; that flows both ways. They can speak to us and change how we face them.

What is fire? It is neither wood, nor oxygen, nor heat, nor light. It is activity. Activity engaging these making these. Leaping. Here now. Gone now. Remembered. Imagined.

What stories we never heard will the campfire draw forth from our ancestral memories through our lips?

Deeper into the night, what stories will the campfire itself tell us?

What stories will the 300 year grandchildren-elders tell? Will they speak of us? Of a great shuddering?

We have projected current trends in many fields into the future. Now it is time to view a future discontinuous with our dominant culture.
