Am listening to a Krista Tippett On Being podcast with a scientist involved in the search for extra terrestrial intelligence (SETI) project. It is fascinating, and giving me some insights and things to think about. TTTA. She has just said that if the space of the universe and the parameters to search were the size of all the oceans on earth and we were searching for the existence of fish, our SETI search so far is having dipped in a quart jar and finding no fish. And she is saying our stand-in for intelligence is electomagnetic communication, and our search is for something like us, hydrogen and water based, and so we might be listening with the wrong kind of ears, and feeling for the wrong fluids. What is intelligence? What is life? What is human?
Parallel questions. Huge questions. No wonder I cannot find but puny answers, no wonder I cannot find but words that mean at once too much and too little.
Please pass it on.
