vulnerability and backbone
Human relationship implies—and needs—permeability and standing in the face, vulnerability and backbone.

The mind evolved from seeing and reacting to seeing and seeing we were seeing: reflecting on our very thinking. We have started, of course, on the next progressing: reflecting on our reflecting on our reflecting. Or maybe something utterly beyond that. Only now it’s going to take more than one of us.

When did you start living your authentic life instead of your supposed-to one?

As we dig, we are digging into ever wider worlds, each progressively more open to our art. As we explore and go deeper, we find unexpected opportunities to give our gifts. Our gifts are seen and accepted; they become more meaty and burgeon. We grow unobserved as we focus on giving our highest best. The world we find is a sink-hole: if we dig a little, more opens out to us of its own accord.

Take more opportunity to put forth my elder role: in conversation light and heavy, in facilitating others’, in consultations with clients. Draw forth their eldering and their deeper aspects, their more cosmic relationships. Be softer, wiser, gentler, more loving, more inventive.

A deer stands hidden and silent, lets us see for a moment, then is gone. Gracefully deer surmount obstacles. Deer see into the dark and know the ways through the woods. All in all a good symbol for our eldering.

You stand at a threshold. Age might bring you here to the border of elderhood. Or not. There is an element of choice. Scary, yes?

Bill Plotkin writes that progress is made by going deeper into the current stage until Mystery presents us with the next stage; to love where we are is the best way to progress. I do like the circle or spiral motif. The compass directions are evocative. Yet this can have us thinking in terms of moving horizontally to the next station, when it seems to me more accurate to view it as digging deeper and deeper till one comes to the next level, the next layer. Stratum. Deeper also means gathering and savoring the richness and flavors and surprises of each stratum.

A human’s progress
is not so much upon a plane
fore or aft, left or right
rather deeper to deeper
perhaps ever more ethereal
